Details about Microsoft Windows XP have been leaking out for almost a year. Perhaps the biggest surprise surrounding its debut is Microsoft's decision to release the operating system a month before the previously announced date. As for the product itself: Windows XP is Microsoft's latest—and dare we say greatest—operating system to date.
As always, the release comes with a degree of controversy. Microsoft contends that Windows XP offers users an unprecedented level of convenience. Critics argue that Windows XP stifles competition by bundling features that were previously available only in third-party software, thus letting Microsoft continue to leverage its OS monopoly to muscle into new markets.
But one point is undebatable: Windows XP is the most significant operating-system upgrade since Windows 95. And perhaps even more significant, Windows XP jettisons all the old DOS, 16-bit Windows, and Windows 95 code that has been part of every consumer-oriented Windows version up to and including Windows Millennium Edition. Certainly, Microsoft started on solid ground: The Professional Edition and Home Edition of Windows XP are derived from the Windows 2000 (nee NT) kernel. The Professional incarnation is aimed at high-end and corporate users. The Home Edition leaves out some more esoteric high-end features and has default settings for less technical users to minimize confusion.(www.pcmag.com)
