The Best Consumer Video Editors

The ideal consumer-level video editor should be powerful enough to handle high-def content and offer plenty of options, but the features should be easy to understand and use. Our current Editors' Choice, CyberLink PowerDirector 7 Ultra is a prime example: It's speedy, offers excellent enhancement and correction features, and supplies lots of artistic effects. It also lets you share your custom DVD content online and easily incorporate Flickr images into your videos.

A newcomer to the consumer video-editor space, Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 provides an extensive set of features and solid usability. We loved its capture and trimming capabilities, along with its wide range of output options. The application lets you upload video to YouTube by clicking on one button and gives you room to get creative with innovative DVD menu templates. It may be a bit less polished overall, but it's a viable option for folks with less-powerful PCs who want to edit HD video.

If you prefer power over ease of use, Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack delivers, but you'll have to get your hands dirty and invest some time to master the nitty gritty of the product. It has nearly the same interface as the company's professional program Vegas Pro 8, but Sony includes some accessible tutorials and additional consumer-oriented features. The application doesn't offer the best value overall, but techies who want more intricate control over the video-editing process will like it.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there's Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 12, which, at least for ease of use, beats all the other video editors in this review roundup. It has a simple interface, bold new special-effects themes, and cool third-party functionality. This is an awesome tool for beginners, but it lacks the high-end functionality provided by the other editors in this roundup.

Excellent across-the-board functionality and usability make this the best choice in the consumer editing field.

Beginners will like this handy tool. However, it lacks the high-end functionality that the other consumer-level editors provide.

Sony's offering works best for users who don't mind investing significant time in mastering the product, but it's not for those who value ease of use above all.
