Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack ($129.95 direct) gives you almost the same interface as the one in Vegas Pro 8, the company's professional program, augmenting it with some accessible tutorials and additional consumer-oriented features. The software also includes a very competent audio editor and authoring program. But while the editing interface is highly efficient and stable, it confronts you with unfamiliar concepts, like audio and video "envelopes" and "event groupings," that make the program harder to learn than others in its class.
For upwardly mobile video editors this time investment is worthwhile. When you're ready to move up, you can jump to the senior version of Vegas without skipping a beat. In contrast, Adobe Premiere Elements has diverged so much from Premiere Pro that moving to the more advanced Adobe editor is almost like starting from scratch. If you just want to produce a quick video, though, and have no higher aspirations, you'll find Vegas Movie Studio too time-consuming compared with other consumer editors.
The Pro Pack includes Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Platinum, DVD Architect Studio 4.5, Sound Forge Audio Studio 9, the Cinescore Studio plug-in, Home Studio Soundtrack Pack Vol. 1, Pro Pack Cinescore themes, NewBlue MSPP 3D transitions and effects, 1,001 Sound Effects, and 44 DVD themes.
