The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, a much-awaited Windows Mobile phone, is launching in the US the day after Thanksgiving - but only through Sony's own sonystyle.com store, and for $799.99

We've been following the Xperia since it was first announced in February (article, video tour). It's even more customized than HTC's Windows Mobile phones, with its own SDK so developers can write the 'panels' that make up the Xperia's unique, nine-paned interface. Future models might not even run Windows Mobile, we learned a few months ago.

The current Xperia has a 3-inch, 800x480 touch screen, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a slide-out keyboard. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 and works on T-Mobile's EDGE network and AT&T's and foreign 3G networks. Find out more at the device's flashy official site.(www.gearlog.com)

Corel VideoStudio Pro X2

With the release of the $99.99 (direct) Corel VideoStudio Pro X2, this consumer-level video-editing program has matured into a highly likeable and usable program. The software offers a good range of editing capabilities and output options. On their own, the newly enlarged effect-configuration windows and the ability to toggle effects on and off (which aids previewing) are worth the price of the upgrade. But beyond these two worthwhile updates, the software is a very solid choice for DV, HDV, or AVCHD editing. It's especially good for users editing HD video on slower computers, where VideoStudio's proxy editing feature really shines.

When you open the program, the VideoStudio Launcher splash screen presents three choices: VideoStudio Editor, Movie Wizard, and DV-to-DVD Wizard. The overall interface is structurally similar to that of the last version, but the background has changed to slate gray, which is more attractive and easier on the eyes. As before, you can choose between four different layouts, and you can modify whichever you settle on by resizing each of its three main areas.

In VideoStudio Editor, you direct workflow via seven tabs arrayed across the top of the interface in an order that reflects the general flow of the editing process: Capture, Edit, Effect, Overlay, Title, Audio, and Share. It's a very intuitive approach that walks you through your project. I'm also happy to see that the preview pane is large.

On the other hand, Corel could do more to help users choose the optimal project preset, the way the new project wizard does in Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack. If you venture into the VideoStudio Project Properties dialog (File | Project Properties), you'll see two choices—Microsoft AVI and MPEG—but nothing tells you which is best for an AVCHD project or a QuickTime import from a digital camera. And once you choose a DV project, you then have to choose between type 1 and type 2 DV. It's a distinction I've long since forgotten, and I do this for a living—I'm sure few readers remember, (www.pcmag.com)

Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack

Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack ($129.95 direct) gives you almost the same interface as the one in Vegas Pro 8, the company's professional program, augmenting it with some accessible tutorials and additional consumer-oriented features. The software also includes a very competent audio editor and authoring program. But while the editing interface is highly efficient and stable, it confronts you with unfamiliar concepts, like audio and video "envelopes" and "event groupings," that make the program harder to learn than others in its class.

For upwardly mobile video editors this time investment is worthwhile. When you're ready to move up, you can jump to the senior version of Vegas without skipping a beat. In contrast, Adobe Premiere Elements has diverged so much from Premiere Pro that moving to the more advanced Adobe editor is almost like starting from scratch. If you just want to produce a quick video, though, and have no higher aspirations, you'll find Vegas Movie Studio too time-consuming compared with other consumer editors.

The Pro Pack includes Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Platinum
, DVD Architect Studio 4.5, Sound Forge Audio Studio 9, the Cinescore Studio plug-in, Home Studio Soundtrack Pack Vol. 1, Pro Pack Cinescore themes, NewBlue MSPP 3D transitions and effects, 1,001 Sound Effects, and 44 DVD themes. For those interested solely in video editing, Sony offers versions of Vegas Movie Studio for as little as $54.95(www.pcmag.com)

The Best Consumer Video Editors

The ideal consumer-level video editor should be powerful enough to handle high-def content and offer plenty of options, but the features should be easy to understand and use. Our current Editors' Choice, CyberLink PowerDirector 7 Ultra is a prime example: It's speedy, offers excellent enhancement and correction features, and supplies lots of artistic effects. It also lets you share your custom DVD content online and easily incorporate Flickr images into your videos.

A newcomer to the consumer video-editor space, Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 provides an extensive set of features and solid usability. We loved its capture and trimming capabilities, along with its wide range of output options. The application lets you upload video to YouTube by clicking on one button and gives you room to get creative with innovative DVD menu templates. It may be a bit less polished overall, but it's a viable option for folks with less-powerful PCs who want to edit HD video.

If you prefer power over ease of use, Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack delivers, but you'll have to get your hands dirty and invest some time to master the nitty gritty of the product. It has nearly the same interface as the company's professional program Vegas Pro 8, but Sony includes some accessible tutorials and additional consumer-oriented features. The application doesn't offer the best value overall, but techies who want more intricate control over the video-editing process will like it.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there's Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 12, which, at least for ease of use, beats all the other video editors in this review roundup. It has a simple interface, bold new special-effects themes, and cool third-party functionality. This is an awesome tool for beginners, but it lacks the high-end functionality provided by the other editors in this roundup.
Featured in this roundup:

Corel VideoStudio Pro X2

This is a very good consumer-level video editor. It's especially suitable for users with less powerful PCs who want to edit HD video, but it's less innovative and polished than some of the competition.

CyberLink PowerDirector 7 Ultra
Excellent across-the-board functionality and usability make this the best choice in the consumer editing field.

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 12
Beginners will like this handy tool. However, it lacks the high-end functionality that the other consumer-level editors provide.

Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack
Sony's offering works best for users who don't mind investing significant time in mastering the product, but it's not for those who value ease of use above all.

RIM BlackBerry Storm 9530

Verizon's BlackBerry Storm 9530 is a radical new direction for BlackBerry, but it's imperiled by a difficult-to-use QWERTY keyboard and widespread reports of serious bugs.

The decidedly sexy 5.5-ounce Storm is a 4.4-by-2.4-by-0.5-inch (HWD) slab dominated by a 3.3-inch, 360-by-480-pixel touch screen, which is capacitive, meaning it detects the electricity from your fingers, and transflective, so it's easy to view outdoors in bright light. Below the display are Pick Up and End call buttons, a Back button, and the familiar BlackBerry menu key. On the sides of the handset, you'll find Camera, Volume, and a programmable multifunction button. Mute and lock buttons are on the top panel. The phone's metal back is home to the speakerphone and the camera.Buzz up!
on Yahoo!

Every few years, RIM changes what we think about smartphone keyboards. The SureType hybrid keyboard introduced on the BlackBerry 7130e seemed wacky at the time, but now the BlackBerry Pearl is a mainstream bestseller. RIM has changed the game once again with the Storm's radical click screen, which you click by pressing down.

A bit of honesty: I hate, hate, hate entering text on the iPhone. I really prefer having some sort of physical feedback to be sure that I've pressed a key. And the Storm gives me that feedback—with a real, solid click. If you're like me, this might be the first touch screen you actually love.(www.pcmag.com)

Will UVC Processors Be AMD's Answer to the Atom?

AMD will hold its annual analyst meeting, gathering Wall Street analysts and press to its Sunnyvale headquarters. There, AMD will be grilled (again) on its "asset-smart" strategy as well as a new topic: what is AMD doing about the Atom?

It's a topic of some concern to AMD, although just how much remains uncertain. Intel's Atom became a surprise hit after netbooks/nettops/Mobile Internet Devices/cheap notebooks began attracting consumers' eyes more and more. But how many of these use or will use the Atom is another question entirely. One thing seems certain, however: the Asian market loves laptops, and the Atom provides it with a low-cost, low-power processor.(www.gearlog.com)

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9000

If the Bold works, don't fix it. AT&T followed that advice and has achieved mostly solid results on its version of RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9000, which is similar to the model for Canada's Rogers Wireless, we reviewed back in August. The Bold remains an excellent executive smartphone with a gorgeous screen, reliable e-mail, Microsoft Office document editing, and a terrific media player. But we wish AT&T had used that three-month delay to work on the troubled Web browser, which still struggles to load pages that contain JavaScript.(www.pcmag.com)

Pure Digital Flip MinoHD Camcorder

The company that practically invented the YouTube-ready camcorder, Pure Digital, has finally released a high definition camcorder, the Flip MinoHD (Specs, Recent News, $229.99) ($229 MSRP). While it's always exciting to see the next product from a winning company, the MinoHD is a bit of a conundrum. First of all, YouTube does not support HD video. Secondly, even if you wanted skip uploading and simply play back video on your big screen HDTV, the MinoHD only offers a standard definition connection. In fact, the only way to watch your HD video is on a computer.

The Front (3.5)
On the surface, the Flip MinoHD appears nearly identical to the Mino. Both have the same f/2.4 fixed lens, with no optical zoom and a 2x digital zoom. The mono microphone is located to the right of the lens; the rest is a smooth, glossy black finish. The only discernible difference is that the lens appears set further back in the body on the MinoHD, and that the matte silver trim on the Mino has been altered to a reflective silver trim on the MinoHD.

The Right Side (3.25)
The right side of the Flip MinoHD is extremely slender. At the top is the power on/off button. At the bottom is the anchor for the removable wrist strap.

The Back (5.25)
The back of the Flip MinoHD features one prominently placed, hard plastic red button to begin and end recording. Surrounding it are a number of touch-sensitive areas that blend into the smooth plastic facade. A plus and minus button above and below control the zoom during recording, and the volume during playback. The buttons to the right and left are used to select the clip for playback. The indented areas above the red button are to play/pause recorded clips, and to delete clips.

The Left Side (3.25)
The left side of the Flip MinoHD highlights how thin the camcorder is. At the top is the USB arm release switch. Towards the bottom is the AV-out jack.

The Top (5.0)
The top of the Flip MinoHD features the namesake element, the flip-out USB arm for connection to a computer. If the arm does not offer enough clearance, you can purchase a USB extension cable from Pure Digital, though one should really be included in the box.(www.camcorderinfo.com)

Microsoft Ships Its Biggest OS Upgrade Ever—Early

Product: Microsoft Windows XP
Price: Home Edition: $199 ($99 if upgrading from Windows 98 or later). Professional Edition: $299 ($199 if upgrading from from Windows NT 4.0 or later).
Requires: 233-MHz processor, 64MB RAM (minimum); 300-MHz or better processor, 128MB RAM

Details about Microsoft Windows XP have been leaking out for almost a year. Perhaps the biggest surprise surrounding its debut is Microsoft's decision to release the operating system a month before the previously announced date. As for the product itself: Windows XP is Microsoft's latest—and dare we say greatest—operating system to date.

Cynics would say that the move is just Microsoft's way of derailing injunctions by state attorneys general that hope to delay the release of Windows XP. PC makers can sell new machines loaded with Windows XP on September 24, which increases the legal and practical difficulties of making any court-ordered changes to the operating system. Boxed versions will ship on the previously announced release date of October 25. (www.pcmag.com)

Panasonic SDR-H60 Camcorder

The Panasonic SDR-H60
($499 MSRP) is the company's top single-chip, standard definition hard drive camcorder, and it packs a wallop when it comes to features: 50x optical zoom and 60GB capacity. Nothing in this price range can beat the SDR-H60, at least on paper. Our testing revealed that the bright light performance could not distinguish itself from the pack, and the low light performance left a lot to be desired. Surprisingly, we found that the step-up model, the three-CCD SDR-H200, was not necessarily the better camcorder, but the SDR-H60 certainly didn't prove itself to be the best value in its class.

The Front (5.5)
The Panasonic SDR-H60 has a standard feel and shape, as far as camcorders go, and recalls the looks of most Panasonic camcorders for the past few years. If you want something a little more modern or designer, we recommend checking out the Samsung SC-MX20 or the JVC Everio GZ-MG330 (Review, Specs, $317.95).

The front of the body is made up of the lens and the microphone. The SDR-H60 has an f/2.0 - 5.0 lens with a focal length of 1.8 - 90mm. The optical zoom extends out to 50x, making it one of the most powerful zoom camcorders on the market – perfect for bird watchers and voyeurs alike. The lens has a manual cover, which is operated by a small switch on top. Below the lens is a built-in stereo microphone. It's well-placed and will likely evade wandering fingers.(www.camcorderinfo.com)

Motorola Launches H15 and H780 Bluetooth Headsets

it's noise-cancelling Bluetooth headset day. At lunch today, Motorola rolled out two new noise-cancelling headsets, the flagship MOTOPURE H15 and the less-expensive H780. The new pair follow up the disastrous MOTOPURE H12, a noise-cancelling headset which in our tests did not actually cancel any noise.
The H15, at least, seems to be doing much better. Motorola dragged me around Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan to show off the noise-zapping functions, and I made several calls to both humans and robots. The H15 did a terrific job of cancelling the noise coming through my mic - the folks on the other end reported not hearing the background noise. But although they sounded clear to me, they weren't all that loud in the earpiece, and I found myself mashing the 'volume up' button futilely

The H15 and H780 use a new version of CrystalTalk, Motorola's noise-cancelling algorithm. Like Plantronics' recent Voyager 835, they use two microphones to detect and cancel outside noise, and alter both the sound profile that they're transmitting out and the frequency distribution in your own earpiece accordingly.

Both headsets have multipoint Bluetooth 2.1 for easy pairing to multiple phones and come with multiple earbuds to fit your ear. The smaller H15 has 4.5 hours of talk time; the larger H780 has 7 hours.

The MOTOPURE H15 will be available for $129 later this year. The H780 will be available for $99 later this year. (www.pcmag.com)

Microsoft's Whistler: Now Serving Up Beta 2

Scheduled for release during the second half of the year, Microsoft Whistler Server offers some important enhancements for Web site operators and hosting services that have been slow to adopt Windows 2000. We took a look at the latest beta release, Beta 2, build 2462, which offers a preview of what's to come. In addition to enhancements such as built-in CD burning and support for ZIP files, Whistler Server has the same user interface as Windows XP.

You can administer the Internet Information Server in Version 6 (IIS6) simply by editing a very large XML configuration file called the Metabase. Saving the file when you're done automatically activates the changes. And because the Metabase is written in XML, you can write your own programs to edit it.

Busy network administrators crave powerful command line and scripting capabilities, because these features allow them to complete hours of work in seconds. Windows servers have been strong in scripting but comparatively weak in command line administration.

By writing a series of scripts to perform administration tasks, Microsoft used the former capability to fortify the latter. Administrators can tailor the scripts, which are reasonably well documented, to meet special needs.

In view of the number and significance of the improvements to IIS6, Whistler is a significant overhaul. For example, in Windows 2000, IIS5 could isolate an ISAPI (Internet Server Application Program Interface) application in its own process, preventing the application from interrupting the Web server process. But this took a performance penalty. Microsoft has restructured IIS6 to eliminate the performance hit. The HTTP server is a separate kernel-mode process with caching that runs no matter how dysfunctional the sites become.

Among other enhancements, the IIS code now lets multiple instances of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs run faster. ASP pages are cached at the server in a preinterpreted state so that they don't have to be interpreted at runtime.

IIS administrators know that poorly written software suffering from memory leaks is common. Such applications request memory but fail to release it when it's no longer needed, causing a systemwide slowdown. IIS6 lets you schedule a second instance of a program, then terminate the first when it becomes idle. Hence, if you're running a leaky application, you can do so without compromising the whole server. In fact, IIS6 restarts any Web application that crashes.

Hands On With the Motorola ROKR EQ5 Bluetooth Speakers

The problem with Bluetooth speakers, or any portable speakers for that matter, is that generally, you trade sound quality and bass response for size. Accordingly, any set of speakers that actually fit in your pocket tend to sound a bit like a $10 AM radio. Thankfully, Motorola's ROKR EQ5 speakers break with the tired tradition, delivering surprisingly loud and crisp sound over Bluetooth, while doubling as a fairly decent speakerphone that slides easily into a pants pocket. Unfortunately, the $120 price tag means most of us will be settling for speakers that sound worse, or keeping our music and phone calls to ourselves.

The 15mm-thin speakers charge over standard (though still not all that common) micro USB, deliver close to Moto's claimed 8 hours of battery life, and output more than enough volume to turn your cell phone or media player into a small-scale boom box. Don't expect deep, thumping bass, or the huge sound that comes from a $1000 stereo system, but if you're looking for something small to supplement your crappy laptop speakers for watching DVDs or listening to some music, the EQ5 will do the job nicely.

Pairing the speakers with my HTC Tilt was simple, and as long as your phone or laptop supports Bluetooth's A2DP profile, you can change tracks and pause your tunes with the buttons on the front of the speakers. A flip-out metal kick-stand with a no-slip base keeps the speakers upright and pointed in the right direction. If you have the EQ5 paired with your phone, incoming calls automatically pause your music, and answering is as easy as pressing the large button on the top of the device. (www.gearlog.com)

Hands On: Cardo S-2 Stereo Bluetooth Headset

Bluetooth headsets are an enticing option for the tech-obsessed, particularly as Micro SD cards have become cheaper and more spacious. After all, why carry a media player, headphones, phone, and Bluetooth headset when your phone and a pair of headphones can give you the same functionality without a single wire? For a long time, though, Bluetooth headphones have been expensive and bulky, and tended to deliver distorted sound.

Comfort is an important consideration whenever you buy headphones, but for a set that you're also using as a phone headset, it's absolutely key. Cardo did a great job here by using a soft, supple pair of wings to hold the speakers to your ears. Even after hours of use, my ears didn't feel pinched or otherwise sore, which is more than I can say for my previous pair of Bluetooth headphones, the Motorola HT820. The S-2's also fold up to a manageable size, which is a big plus for those times when you aren't wearing them.
The headphones and the microphone are loud and powerful enough to be heard in all but the most noisy of urban situations, which is another area where the S-2's trounce the too-quiet Motorola HT820 headphones. And stereo sound quality through the headphones is on a par with the best I've ever heard over Bluetooth.

Battery life with mixed calls and music averaged about 4 to 5 hours, meaning you'll be charging the headphones about every other day. Thankfully, the S-2's feature a standard mini-USB port, so if you have access to a computer at work, battery charging will be less of a bother.

Nokia N810

The N810, like its predecessors the N800 and N770, isn't a phone. It's a Linux-based handheld computer that connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or with a Bluetooth connection through a mobile phone. Nokia has finally gotten the form factor right; the N810 is a pleasure to hold and to use. The 2.8 by 5 by 0.55 inches (HWD), 7.9-ounce metallic body feels solid, and the richly colorful 4.1-inch 800-by-480-pixel touch screen slides up to reveal a thumb keypad. There's a VGA camera built into the side for video calling, and a little stand pops out of the back if you want to prop the N810 up on your desk. On the top, a lock switch lets you use it as an MP3 player in a coat pocket without worrying about bumping the screen. Overall, it's an attractive, thoughtfully built piece of hardware.

The N810's home screen consists of "widgets," including a Google search box, RSS reader, clock, and Internet radio app that you can move around on the screen, showing the Debian Linux–based operating system's attractive transparency effects. Big icons on the left-hand side of the screen let you launch other apps with your fingers. It's a well-designed interface, though it isn't quite as simple to navigate as its direct rival, Apple's iPod touch.

The N810 connects to the Internet effortlessly, either through Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g (with WPA2) or using a Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone. If you choose to go the mobile-phone route, you'll need to subscribe to a relatively expensive tethering plan—around $50 a month—from your carrier. This has nothing to do with Nokia, though. Web browsing is the device's real strength. Nokia is the true king of handheld Web browsers. The company's Series 60 phone browser is the best in the business, and the N810's browser renders pages that look just as good as they do on a PC, including Flash (but not Java) plug-ins. That's superior to the iPod touch, which can't handle Flash.

The e-mail program supports only POP3. When I tried to use its IMAP option, the device choked and crashed. But messages are rendered in HTML, and reading text on the crisp-looking screen is a pleasure. The interface did seem a bit sluggish sometimes, with responses trailing after button presses—a surprise considering the device's relatively powerful, 400-MHz processor. The N810 has 2GB of onboard flash memory, and a slot on the bottom of the device takes miniSD cards for additional storage; an 8GB SanDisk card worked fine.(www.pcmag.com)

Apple Notebooks Take Huge Performance Hit without Battery

Some notebook users pop them out when their systems are running on AC with hopes of extending the life of their battery by a few months.

While I was benchmarking third-party RAM with a MacBook Pro this week, I noticed that the computer was taking a huge hit in performance when it wasn't running on Apple-supplied memory. A minor decrease in performance might be unlikely, but a 37 percent plunge in processing power seemed impossible. After some backtracking, I realized that I had been running the benchmarks without the battery installed after I'd swapped out the stock RAM for third-party memory. The MacBook Pro was running off AC power for both tests, but the battery was installed only while I was running the benchmark with 4GB of stock RAM.

After some digging, I found that the performance drop is documented on Apple's support Web site--though honestly, Apple's reason for forcing a drop in processor speed doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Apple justifies the speed reduction by explaining that it "prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide." But what happens when a battery is no longer able to hold a charge? Does the processor speed drop in that case as well?

We benchmarked our 2.53-Ghz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM using Cinebench R10's multiprocessor test, and achieved a score of 5,549 with the battery present and 3,504 with the battery removed.

Lesson learned: The battery stays in. If you're a MacBook or MacBook Pro owner, you'll get the best performance out of your system when you leave the battery in. A small extension of your battery's life span is not worth a 37 percent drop in performance.(www.gearlog.com)

Apple announced Tuesday that Papermaster was hired as its new senior vice president of devices hardware engineering, replacing iPod innovator Tony Fadell.

Papermaster is a 26-year veteran of IBM and most recently served as vice president of IBM's blade development unit, which designs IBM's blade-model servers. In June 2006, Papermaster signed a non-compete agreement in which he agreed not to work for an IBM competitor for at least a year if he ever left IBM, according to court documents.(www.gearlog.com)

TwinMOS Announces DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM Memory for Laptops

TwinMOS has announced DDR3 SO-DIMM laptop memory modules, operating at speeds of up to 1333MHz.

“This new-generation DDR3 SO-DIMM module for laptops uses the 8-bit pre-fetch design. As it is a double of the DDR2 modules, the clock frequency begins from 800MHz and can be increased to 1066MHz and 1333MHz. Prior to this, its 204-pin design platform is different from the 200-pin design in DDR2 modules for laptops. Thanks to the evolution in die processes, the working voltage of DDR3 modules for laptops has been reduced from 1.8V of DDR2 modules for laptop to 1.5V,” the company’s press release says.

These DDR3 memory modules are expected to bring better performance and extend battery life in laptops, which now mostly use 667MHz DDR2.

The availability date for the TwinMOS DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM is currently unknown.

The first notebooks supporting DDR3 memory will be those based on the next-generation Intel “Montevina” mobile platform. The “Montevina’s” launch is scheduled for mid-2008.

Sharper Video From a Camcorder That Uses Flash Memory

Canon added new models to its high-end camcorder line that will be available in September. The Vixia HF11, with an estimated price of $1,200, uses flash memory instead of the more common tape cassettes or revolving hard drives.

Since flash memory dispenses with moving parts, battery life and shock resistance are better than in other camcorders. The Vixia comes with 32 gigabytes of onboard memory plus a slot for a memory card that can add as much as 32 gigabytes.

The new Vixia captures more data than previous models. At its highest quality setting (1,920 by 1,080 pixels at 24 megabits a second), 32 gigabytes yields 3 hours of video. This setting surpasses some high-definition video and results in greater detail and smoother motion without jagged images.

Although this camera is aimed squarely at the consumer market, professional videographers are expected to become fans. And for good reason: At 2.5 by 2.9 inches and 5 inches long, this 13.4-ounce camera is good enough to film a documentary, and it fits in a pocket.

Canon EOS Rebel XSi

Canon's EOS Rebel XSi ($699 list, body only) is the fourth model in Canon's Digital Rebel class, a series that sparked the prosumer D-SLR revolution. In snatching the Editors' Choice crown from the EOS Digital Rebel XTi, the XSi continues Canon's tradition of adding substantial new features and improving on the previous model to keep pace with the competition. The XSi has a 12.2-megapixel resolution, up from 10MP in the XTi and double the pixel count of the original Rebel. Among its new features are an image-stabilized kit lens, a larger LCD display, Live View, a revamped control scheme/button layout, SD/SDHC-card compatibility, and longer battery life.

As the higher-end version of two recently launched Digital Rebels, the XSi has a less-expensive sibling, the 10MP XS. The EOS Rebel XS offers Live View, SD card compatibility and a larger battery pack, but has some downgrades—even from the XTi—such as a seven-point autofocus system. The XTi and XSi's have nine-point autofocus systems, whereas the competing Nikon D60 has only a three-point system.

Gone is the silver trim of previous Rebels. The XSi is all black, and attractive as such—though it's also available in all silver. The frame is mostly hard plastic but feels sturdy: The XSi is solid and easy enough to hold steady when framing a picture. It measures 3.8 by 5.1 by 2.4 inches (HWD) without lens, weighs 475g (just over a pound), and is similar in size to the Nikon D60, though both are smaller and lighter than the Sony Alpha DSLR-A350. Still, like any SLR, the Rebel XSi is a substantial and somewhat bulky camera. It will feel all the more conspicuous if you're trading up from an ultracompact, or if you lug extra lenses with you. The XSi is compatible with more than 60 Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S series, as well as some other brands of lenses if you have the proper adapters. You'll want to invest in a decent bag to hold both the camera and a few extra lenses.
